Increase NIH and NCI Funding
The majority of pancreatic cancer research funding comes from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the primary federal agency charged with biomedical research.
The most recent information from the NCI shows pancreatic cancer received $172 million in FY 2017, a 17 percent increase over the previous year. However, more funding and resources are necessary to help researchers discover and build upon the scientific findings necessary to develop better early detection tools and more effective treatment options.
Private funding from sources like PanCAN is critical to move the field forward, but the majority of research dollars come from the NIH. The research community and patients are counting on Congress to continue to provide robust, sustainable and predictable funding.
Our Call to Action
Urge Congress to increase federal funding for the NIH and NCI.
Thanks to our advocates contacting their legislators and raising awareness on Capitol Hill, the NIH and NCI have seen consistent increases in federal funding over the past several years. But pancreatic cancer patients still lack effective treatment options and early detection tools.
In a joint effort with the larger cancer community, we are asking Congress to fund the NIH at $41.6 billion for FY 2020, including $6.5 billion for the NCI.
Be In The Know
Congress works for YOU, their constituents. You are the reason Congress continues to provide robust, sustainable increases for lifesaving cancer research at the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute and the Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program. But there is more to be done to advance research and ensure better outcomes for patients.
